About Charlestown
Charlestown was founded in 1629 and is set along the shores of Boston Harbor. Known as the city’s oldest neighborhood, it offers a rich sense of history combined with a strong residential character. In the late 20th century, Charlestown experienced significant revitalization, attracting young families and professionals who were drawn to its historic homes and close proximity to downtown.
At the heart of the neighborhood is City Square, a historically significant area that reflects Charlestown’s deep roots. Nearby, the iconic Warren Tavern is known for hosting George Washington and remains a landmark tied to the city’s colonial past. The neighborhood is also home to key stops along the Freedom Trail, including the prominent Bunker Hill Monument. Docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard is the oldest commissioned vessel in the U.S. Navy, the USS Constitution. Charleston Navy Yard is also where modern waterfront living now includes luxury condominium residences with amenities like concierge services and parking.
Today, Charlestown has a relatively small and tight-knit population, with a median age in the mid-30s and household incomes above the Boston average. Its blend of historic significance, waterfront setting, and thoughtfully updated housing makes it one of the city’s most unique and desirable neighborhoods, offering both a connection to the past and a comfortable, modern lifestyle.
