About Newton

The City of Newton is located seven miles west from downtown Boston. It is home to approximately 87,000 people who live in the 13 neighborhoods that make up Newton. The city consists of 18.16 square miles, quite large in relation to its proximity to Boston, and provides a unique small community feel with a wealth of resources. Many residents commute to work using I-95 running north/south or the Mass. Turnpike, I-90 running east/west. The MBTA green line, commuter rail, and bus system provide excellent public transportation options.

The Newton Public Schools are renowned in the Boston area, often ranked annually in the top 10 school systems by Boston Magazine on many factors, including test scores and college placement. Details on its schools can be found at www.newton.k12.ma.us. Newton also has several private schools and three colleges within its borders.

Newton is aptly called “The Garden City.” Many parks, preservation land, and the large Crystal Lake and Chestnut Hill Reservoir allow residents green space for recreation. Parks and recreation offerings are listed at www.newtonma.gov/parks. Year-round farmers’ markets and festivals provide locally sourced food and entertainment. Each neighborhood has quick access to shops and restaurants that serve the community.

Given all of the amenities of Newton, the lifestyle and housing prices are quite high and have held their value. The tree-lined streets, close proximity to Boston, and major highways make it an ideal place to call home.
